Questions and Answers
Q: My husband and I were thinking of signing up for the "Recreational" race. I just wonder if you can give us more descriptions of the course.

A: The start will detour out and along Malaghans Road before following the line of the new Wakatipu Trails Trust track which goes through West Millbrook and then out down a new track - you will use the brakes but not technical.

Across and along 50 metres or so on Speargrass Rd and then a very gradual climb up Slopehill Rd - not steep at all - but steeper than rail trail - down the other side - normal road for cars on gravel
- then a piece of car width 'single track' downhill but easy - - go down slowly with brakes - easy wide trail along the Shotover River - steepish climb up onto the old bridge - may have to push up this section of 10-20metres.

Off the bridge a track cut through willows and broom leads onto the wide gravel roads of the Shotover delta - followed by 300metres of single track

I worked on this section with the shovel to make it more comfortable for everyone - followed by a small climb up a farm road and then a track along the outside of a deer fence (Remarkables Park)
- a paddock and wide path leads around the back of the Remarkables Park subdivision, then the short section of the coned off State Hwy (a netral section ie no passing) before some tracks through paddocks lead onto the farm road all the way to the finish at Chard Farm.
he road climbs to the finish at Chard farm which is a hundred metres above the Kawarau River.

The distance is only 36 kms so regular riding would be all the training that you would require to make this distance.

Q: We are wanting to enter this race in the recreation section with kids on tag along bikes. Is this course suitable for this? And do we have to pay for the kids? They are aged 5 and 7?
A: while this is a course for all biking levels, and we have accepted young teenagers with race experience, it is still not open for children that young, even with a tag along bike. They just will need to grow up before joining the group!

Q: on reviewing the course map am a little confused re. where elite / sport categories race; does the course include a lap of Lake Hayes or no? If so I am a little concerned re. safety on this piece of trail/ not very wide for overtaking? Please provide more info.
A: The Elite and Sport sections do a loop of the Lake Hayes track, and offers passing opportunities for bikes provided the overtaker calls "passing". But there is effectively no room to ride two bikes along each other. There will be also a 300 meter section along the Kawarau river which is narrow and single tracked, but competitors will be warned of it, and it will be indicated. And there might be spots elsewhere where it will also be difficult to pass, but overall it should not be an issue.

Q: Is it possible to change my entry to the 'Sport' Option instead of Recreation, I tried to do this within my entry confirmation but it wasn ot possible...
A: no problem, we'll do it for you - and there is no fee to change this either.Newsletter for tour de wakatipu
